Here are nine fragments of tiles from Eynsham Abbey, dating from the 13th to the 15th century CE. Tiles would have been used on the roof of the abbey, too, but we know these to be fragments of ceramic floor tiles.
Although plain, undecorated tiles would also have been used by wealthy people and institutions in medieval times, decorated tiles such as these would have been utilised to adorn religious buildings during this period. Here, we can see something of the variety of colours and designs potters would have created when tile-making. You can just imagine the beauty and intricacy of the finished flooring.
