This a hand-coloured copperplate engraving, made by Samuel and Nathaniel Buck in 1729, depicts the ruins of the interior of Eynsham Abbey as they stood at the end of the 17th century. The engraving is an embellished version of an original drawing by the antiquary and historian Anthony Wood (1632–95).
Wood visited Eynsham and sketched the remains of the Abbey on 16 September 1657. Shortly after his drawing was completed, the remaining abbey structures were demolished and sold. They were used to either build and repair properties in Eynsham and in surrounding villages. Some of the abbey stones have been recovered and are on display in Eynsham Museum’s permanent exhibition, Eynsham from Prehistory to the 20th Century.
