Quatrefoil silver penny of King Cnut (1016-35), from the Exeter mint. Cnut ruled numerous territories of northern Europe in the 11th century CE. He became King of England following his defeat of forces led by the English king Edward Ironside at the Battle of Assandun in October 1016 and Edward Ironside’s subsequent death in November that year. This coin from Cnut’s reign was found at the site of Eynsham Abbey.
