Pieces of Roman mortaria - parts of a bowl or bowls used for grinding, pounding or mixing.

Pieces of Roman mortaria, dating from the 2nd and 3rd centuries CE. Mortaria were important in Roman cookery, which was rich with and blended spices and herbs. These heavy bowls were good for mixing, grinding and pounding. They were made with a strong rim to provide a good grip.

These pieces are believed to have been found in Eynsham, but their exact provenance is unknown.
