A pale green glass bottle without a lid with text on the side that says 'Eiffel Tower Lemonade'

This Victorian pale green bottle, with its square body and short neck, dates from the first decade of the 20th century. The bottle is marked Eiffel Tower Lemonade, not because it emanated from France, but because this was the trademark given to the drinks made by Foster Clark & Co., Maidstone.

The owner, George Foster Clark, was capitalising on the popularity of the Paris landmark, which was built for the 1889 French exhibition that celebrated the 100-year anniversary of the French Revolution. The Eiffel Tower brand was popular all over the UK, including – it seems from the discovery of this bottle – in Eynsham, too.
