Stone ‘cushion’ capital from Eynsham Abbey, mid-12th century

This stone ‘cushion’ capital, once part of Eynsham Abbey, dates from the mid-12th century CE. The capital is the top part of a column. The cushion capital was an architectural feature found in various parts of Europe. Over time, the simple form of the capital evolved to include carving, as can be seen on this example, stucco (or render) and paint.
