Sign from the Sawyers shop, with the words 'Grocers and Ironmongers'

This sign comes from the front of the W. Sawyer and Sons shop, which traded for 115 years from Newland Street, Eynsham. Established in 1856, it was closed in August 1971 and, a few years later, the building was demolished.

During its lifetime, Sawyers used to carry an extensive and varied range of goods. These included groceries and British wines; ironmongery; crockery and glassware; clothes and footwear; gardening products and seeds; stationery and newspapers; medicines; and lamp and other oils. It even sold bicycles and motorcycles at one point!
