A Codd bottle, sometimes called a Codd-neck bottle, was a type of bottle that was designed in 1872 specifically for carbonated drinks by a maker of soft drinks who was called Hiram Codd. The bottles were closed using a glass marble and a rubber seal. The pressure of the gas in the drink forced the marble into the neck of the bottle, thus making it airtight and keeping the drink nicely carbonated.
This green glass bottle came from the Blake & Co. mineral water factory, which used to run from Mill Street, but which later moved to Witney Road. It is embossed with the company name.
Blake & Co made a variety of soft drinks in Eynsham for 85 years from around the 1870s. They included mineral water, lemonade, limeade, cherryade and ginger beer.
